The Effects of Whiplash
Whiplash occurs as the result of a rear-end collision accident. The quick thrusting movement of the head backward and forward is what causes whiplash to occur. Many individuals who experience whiplash feel the effects within 24 hours after the accident. This painful injury has unpleasant effects that can lead to future spine and head injuries if not treated properly. Here are the effects of whiplash and the treatment methods used to fix it.
After Accident Effects
Once a collision accident has occurred, you may instantly feel pain or may not feel any pain at all. The adrenaline that you feel during an accident may hide any sign of pain till you calm down. Once you start feeling the effects, you may feel neck pain, headaches, numbness of the arms, and/or dizziness. These are the common signs that you have a whiplash injury.
Other symptoms include the inability to have any neck movement, irritability, blurred vision, or ringing of the ears. If you experience any of these symptoms after an accident, it is best to visit your doctor as soon as possible.
Your doctor will give you a proper examination to make sure you have no fractures, herniated discs, or tissue damage to your neck and spine. After, the doctor will go over a few treatment methods with you. Depending on the severity of your injuries will determine the amount of treatment necessary. The doctor will most likely prescribe some sort of pain and/or muscle relaxer medication for you to take.
It is important that you get a lot of rest and not exert yourself. Also, doctors will recommend icing or heating your neck to relieve any stiffness and soreness. Physical therapy will be recommended depending on your injury. When you go to physical therapy they will go through several exercises to get you neck moving properly.
Once you have recovered you will be able to resume your normal activities. Whiplash injuries heal anywhere from a few weeks to three months after the accident occurs. Remember to take it easy until you can complete your daily activities again without any pain.
