According to authorities the driver of an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that was involved in an accident at Exit 9W of 787 in Colonie has died. Police say 43-year-old Emmanuel Cassista from Quebec was driving at a very high rate of speed when the crash occurred.
The crash took place on the off-ramp at Exit 9W from 787 northbound to Route 7 westbound. State Police say the 18-wheeler carrying logs when it reportedly lost control and rolled into the grassy area off the highway. The weight of the load caused the truck to roll over on its side after the driver lost control and then the truck flipped completely upside down.
EMS arrived to the scene of the accident soon after it happened to administer on-site first aid to the fatally injured victim. Emergency crews reported that the driver was pronounced deceased when they arrived.
Law enforcement and first responders shut down the ramp after the crash, however, two lanes were left open to traffic on 787. Deputies had to reroute traffic through Exit 8 (787) into Watervliet or ahead up into Cohoes. Eastbound traffic was rerouted into Troy on Route 7, as Hoosick Street remains open.
Officials say the incident is still under investigation and more information will be released pending the results.
Kevin Sobel, Accident Attorney from the Law Firm of Kanner & Pintaluga, commented on the accident: “It’s terribly unfortunate that the driver died in the crash. No other vehicle was involved in the crash. It’s always better if drivers can adhere to traffic regulations and drive within the speed limits.”
