Driving in the Rain: Do’s and Don’ts

Rain is a common enemy for drivers on the road. Not only does it limit your visibility, but makes it more difficult to drive safely. There are a few necessary rules to follow during this harsh weather. Here are some do’s and don’ts to remember next time you’re driving in the rain.

Drive Slow

Wet roads mean you need to slow down. Speeding on wet roads is very dangerous. Even if the tires on your vehicle have a lot of grip, they can still easily hydroplane based on the way you’re driving.

When the road is wet, your tires lose their grip to the road, making it easier for your vehicle to slide. That’s why it’s important to drive slower and take your time.

Headlights and Windshield Wipers On

Headlights are used during wet weather to make the road clear for you and show other drivers you’re there. When there is a heavy down poor, many drivers may not see your vehicle but your headlights will catch their eye.

Your car has windshield wipers to make your front window clear when driving in the rain. These should always be on when the weather is bad. Make sure to adjust the speed depending on the heaviness of the rain. This will maximize your visibility.

Use Flashers

Flashers should only be used if you’re having a vehicle problem or are pulled over on the side of the road. Many drivers believe they should use their flashers during a storm but this is not necessary. Flashers can be distracting to other drivers and may be confused for an ambulance.

Keeping your distance from other drivers on the road is always necessary, but even more important during a storm. Since the roads are wet, tailgating and braking short will land you in an accident.

Make sure to keep a safe distance from another driver so they can see you and you can see them. This will give you enough time to brake without hydroplaning.
