Preventing Dog Bites

The goal is simple; never allow any dog to achieve dominant status over any adult or child; but sometimes man’s best friend will bite. A dog can cause minor or major injury from infection, scaring, disfigurement, or nerve damage. Dog bites can place the victim at risk for illness or even death. People who are around dogs in any occasion should be aware of the risks and take precautions. Here are few tips on how you can prevent dog bites and reduce the risk of illness and injury.

Don’t:

-Approach an unfamiliar dog.

-Run from a dog.

-Panic or make loud noises.

-Disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.

-Pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first.

-Encourage a dog to play aggressively.

-Let small children play with a dog unsupervised.

Do:

-Stop! Stay still and be calm.

-Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog.

-Avoid direct eye contact with the dog.

-Curl into a ball with your head tucked and put your hands over your ears and neck if a dog knocks you over.

-Wait for the dog to pass or slowly back away.

-Immediately notify the proper authorities and let them know about stray dogs.
